Introduction

Backyard birdwatching just got a serious upgrade. BirdSnap is the official companion app for the BirdSnap Smart Bird Feeder, letting you watch visiting birds in real time, receive instant motion alerts when a new guest arrives, and use AI bird identification to learn which species are stopping by your feeder. Developed by BERDZ INC, BirdSnap turns an ordinary feeder into a live wildlife window on your phone — perfect for beginners, bird lovers, and anyone who wants to enjoy backyard nature from anywhere.

What Is BirdSnap?

BirdSnap is a free smart bird feeder app available on iOS and Android. It pairs with the BirdSnap Smart Bird Feeder over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, streams live video from the feeder's built-in camera, and uses AI bird identification to recognize the species that visit throughout the day. The app also stores short video clips of each visit for later review, sends real-time notifications when motion is detected, and includes optional membership tiers (Basic, Plus, Pro) that unlock enhanced AI and premium features.

With 8 supported languages, live bird feeder streaming, AI-assisted species ID, and a growing backyard birding community, BirdSnap aims to be an all-in-one live bird camera experience for backyard wildlife watchers.

Core Features

BirdSnap focuses on what matters most to bird lovers — watching, identifying, and saving visits:

  • Live Bird Feeder Streaming — Watch real-time HD video from your BirdSnap feeder camera anywhere you have an internet connection
  • AI Bird Identification — The app analyzes captured visits and identifies the species, helping you learn backyard birds with zero prior knowledge
  • Instant Motion Alerts — Get push notifications the moment a bird lands at your feeder so you never miss a visit
  • Visit History & Playback — Review saved short clips of past bird visits, scrub through history, and keep your favorite sightings
  • Night Vision Support — Built-in infrared night vision on the feeder camera keeps visibility usable in low light (dim red LEDs)
  • Smart Feeder Setup — Guided in-app onboarding connects the BirdSnap feeder to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi in minutes
  • Membership Tiers — Optional BirdSnap Smart Basic, Plus, and Pro plans unlock advanced AI features and extended cloud services
  • Bird Lover Rewards — Earn points and rewards by sharing visits with the BirdSnap community

How BirdSnap Works

Getting started with BirdSnap takes just a few minutes:

  1. Download the BirdSnap app from the App Store or Google Play
  2. Create an account or sign in with your email
  3. Power on your BirdSnap Smart Bird Feeder and make sure your phone is on a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network (5GHz is not supported)
  4. Tap "Add Device" and follow the guided pairing flow — the app asks for Location permission to scan for nearby Wi-Fi
  5. Start watching — the live feed appears on the home tab, and AI-tagged visits begin populating your history as birds drop in

The feeder's Wi-Fi reach is rated up to 100 meters in open air, though real-world range depends on walls, obstacles, and signal strength. Captured clips are limited to a configurable maximum length (up to 3 minutes per clip in the current FAQ).

AI Bird Identification

BirdSnap's headline feature is its AI bird identification engine. When a bird triggers the feeder camera, the app analyzes the visit and attempts to label the species. Official BirdSnap materials describe a model trained on thousands of species — a useful shortcut for beginners who don't know a house finch from a goldfinch. For casual backyard birders this is the main draw: instead of flipping through a field guide, you can tap a saved visit and see a suggested species name along with the capture thumbnail.

Advanced AI features — such as higher accuracy and expanded species coverage — may be gated behind one of the paid membership tiers (Basic, Plus, Pro).

Subscription vs. No Subscription

One of the most common questions about BirdSnap is whether you need a subscription. Based on official BirdSnap materials:

  • Without a subscription you can still use the core hardware features such as live feeder viewing and saving clips to local storage.
  • With a membership (Basic / Plus / Pro) you unlock enhanced AI bird identification, expanded cloud services, and higher-tier bird-lover benefits.

This means casual users can enjoy the basic live bird camera experience for free, while power users who want the smartest AI features can opt into a paid tier.

Platform Compatibility

The BirdSnap app runs on iOS 15.0 or later and Android 5.0 or later. The interface is available in 8 languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, and Spanish. Note that the BirdSnap Smart Bird Feeder only supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks — 5GHz Wi-Fi is not compatible.

Who Uses BirdSnap?

BirdSnap is designed for anyone who enjoys backyard wildlife:

  • Backyard birdwatchers who want a live window onto their feeder without sitting by the window
  • Beginner birders who want help identifying species they don't recognize
  • Gift buyers looking for a nature-focused gift for parents, grandparents, or kids
  • Nature photographers who want to capture rare visits they'd otherwise miss
  • Retirees and homebound users who enjoy watching nature remotely
  • Teachers and educators introducing students to backyard bird species

FAQ

What is the BirdSnap app?

BirdSnap is the free official companion app for the BirdSnap Smart Bird Feeder, developed by BERDZ INC. It lets you watch live video from your feeder camera, receive instant motion alerts, identify visiting bird species with AI, and review short clips of past visits on iOS and Android.

Does BirdSnap require a subscription?

No. Basic hardware functions such as live feeder viewing and saving clips to local storage work without a subscription. Paid memberships (BirdSnap Smart Basic, Plus, Pro) are optional and unlock enhanced AI bird identification and additional cloud features.

How accurate is BirdSnap's AI bird identification?

BirdSnap claims coverage of thousands of species, but real-world accuracy depends on image quality, lighting, angle, and whether the visiting species is in the training set. For casual backyard birders it is a helpful starting point, especially for common species; rare or partial views may still need manual verification.

Does BirdSnap work with 5GHz Wi-Fi?

No. The BirdSnap Smart Bird Feeder only supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks. You must connect your phone to a 2.4GHz network during setup. If your router broadcasts both bands with the same SSID, you may need to temporarily disable 5GHz to pair successfully.

Why can't BirdSnap find my feeder during setup?

Common causes: you are on a 5GHz network instead of 2.4GHz, Location permission is not enabled (needed for Wi-Fi scanning on modern phones), the feeder is too far from the router, the Wi-Fi password contains special characters, or the feeder needs to be reset. Enable Location permission in system settings and retry on a 2.4GHz network.

How long are BirdSnap video clips?

According to BirdSnap's FAQ, recording length is configurable in the app with a maximum of 3 minutes per clip. Shorter clips make it easier to scroll through visits and save storage.

Does BirdSnap have night vision?

Yes. The BirdSnap feeder camera uses built-in infrared night vision. You may notice dim red LEDs on the camera when night mode is active — this is normal and maintains visibility in low light without disturbing the birds.

How far can the BirdSnap feeder be from my router?

BirdSnap's official FAQ states the feeder's Wi-Fi range is up to about 100 meters in open air. Real-world distance is shorter because walls, furniture, and other wireless devices reduce signal strength. Keep the feeder within reliable 2.4GHz range of your router or use a Wi-Fi extender if needed.

Can I share BirdSnap with my family?

Yes, BirdSnap supports sharing your feeder with additional accounts so family members can watch the same live feed and visit history. The exact sharing permissions depend on the app's current sharing options.

Does BirdSnap work on PC or Mac?

BirdSnap is designed as a mobile app for iOS 15.0+ and Android 5.0+. There is no official desktop app. Some users run the Android version on a PC via an Android emulator, but this is not officially supported by BERDZ INC.

I love watching the cardinals and blue jays stop by the feeder throughout the day. The live stream is a delight and the motion alerts make sure I never miss a visit. My grandkids love it too.

Beautiful concept and the live view works most of the time. AI bird ID is hit-or-miss — spot on for common species, less reliable for warblers. Still a joy to use for casual backyard birding.

Gave this as a gift and ended up buying one for myself. Setup took a couple of tries because I had to switch to 2.4GHz, but once connected it's been stable. The night vision is a nice bonus.

Good idea, decent execution. The live stream works and motion alerts are timely. AI identification is useful for learning but I wouldn't rely on it for anything serious. Hope the developer keeps updating.

Genuinely fun. I'm retired and check the live feed several times a day. The bird lover rewards are a cute touch and the community sharing feature is more engaging than I expected.

Works well once you get past the 2.4GHz setup step. Live video quality is sharp during the day and usable at night with IR. My only gripe is the AI sometimes mislabels squirrels as birds when they try to raid the feeder.

I bought this after seeing a friend's setup. The alerts are instant and the live view loads quickly on Wi-Fi. AI bird ID helped me learn that the bird I thought was a sparrow was actually a house finch.

Solid app for the price of the feeder. Live stream is the main thing I use and it's reliable. I don't subscribe to the Pro tier but the free features cover what I need.

Using this in my classroom to teach kids about local birds. The live camera is a big hit and the AI identification starts great conversations even when it's wrong. Wish for better tablet support.

Nice concept and the live view is the highlight. Initial setup was a bit fiddly — had to enable Location permission before it would find the feeder. Once connected, daily use has been fine.
